Maggie Marilyn Founder Striving for Sustainability

What unites a number of new fashion labels, including New Zealand’s own Maggie Marilyn, is that they have a broader vocabulary when it comes to sustainability – in short: they know what they’re doing, The Telegraph’s fashion editor, Tamara Abraham writes.

Maggie Hewitt, founder of Maggie Marilyn, is well known in the fashion industry for its rigorous environmental standards, which aim to “give back more than we take from Mother Nature.” She is transparent about the impact of every element of her business, from chemical and water management to packaging, and urges her customers to only buy what they hope to wear forever, Abraham writes.

For Hewitt, a sustainable brand is one that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” It’s a goal that she strives towards, but despite her exhaustive efforts, doesn’t believe she has reached.

“We don’t say that we are ‘sustainable’,” she says. “Because are we? No. Not yet…”
