Kiwi Teen Creates Ball Gowns Using Rubbish Bags

Pukekohe teen Havilah Koledoye has created elaborate ball gowns using plastic bags, as reported in The Daily Mail.

Plastic “is quite durable, you can stretch it to anything, it doesn’t rip or tear and I’m ironing the back so it looks all neat,” said the design student, who counts renowned designer Alexander McQueen as her inspiration.

It took her 150 plastic bags, one month and a pair of knitting needles to create one gown. She currently is working on a second statement gown.

Rather than sewing the plastic pieces together “she rips the plastic into thread-like pieces which she then knits,” as reported in The Daily Mail.

One of her sustainable dress designs using plastic and other recyclable materials already was featured on the runway of New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW).

Koledoye started studying at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design this year.
