Lydia Ko Wins New Zealand Open

Lydia Ko has won the ISPS Handa New Zealand Women’s Open for the third time “on a remarkable day that began with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake rattling Christchurch” and “prevailed playing through what the Ladies European Tour reported were 52 aftershocks”, as reported in an article on The Golf Channel.

“It was interesting. I’ve never been on a golf course where there is an earthquake,” said Ko, who was on the practice putting green at Clearwater Golf Club when the earthquake struck.

“It’s been a long week, a lot of emotion and a lot of people to share this amazing victory with, especially given how much New Zealand golf has been a support to me and my career,” said Ko.

The young New Zealand golfer announced that she will be donating her entire winnings (30,000 Euros) to help New Zealand in some way because of the great support New Zealand and its golf program has given her.

“I have discussed this with my family and my team and this is something that we all want to do. We will seriously think about the best way that we can use this money to help New Zealand,” said Ko.

“Ko got particularly emotional remembering former New Zealand Golf president Patsy Hankins, who died last year.”

The win was her 15th worldwide victory.
