Reuniting Families with Sons

Bronte artist Darryl Robertson has dedicated the past few years to helping the Dutch town of Markelo track down the families of three RAF airmen who were killed when their bomber, one of three planes, was shot down near the town during WW2. From his home in New Zealand, he told the New Journal: “When I was younger I occasionally reflected on how lonely and sad it seemed that he had died so young and so far away from his home in New Zealand.” Next year, Markelo, whose residents adopted the airmen as their “treasured boys”, is holding a 70-year memorial in their honour and has invited all known living relatives of 15 of the victims.
