LA Gallery Owner Blown Away by Emma McIntyre

Auckland-born artist Emma McIntyre’s first show out of New Zealand, ‘Pour plenty on the worlds’, is now on in Los Angeles at Chris Sharp Gallery, the new establishment’s debut show.

Sharp, who co-curated the New Zealand Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, met McIntyre while on a trip in New Zealand a few years ago for Dane Mitchell’s New Zealand pavilion at the Biennale. They reconnected in Los Angeles where she is completing a graduate degree at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena.

“If I was impressed by her work in New Zealand, I was blown away by it when I saw it here,” Sharp told Cultured Magazine.

“She’s making a kind of painting that addresses the history of abstraction in novel and totally refreshing ways. Her work is characterised by a formal promiscuity which is also very much about the body thinking on canvas. Like all great painting, it is best appreciated in person.”

In 2019, McIntyre, was awarded a Fulbright General Graduate award, which enabled her to study an MFA at the ArtCenter.

‘Pour plenty on the worlds’ is on until 6 March.
