Rotorua: North Island Adventure Capital

Rotorua on New Zealand’s North Island has “re-invented itself as the adventure capital of the North Island,” writes Sandra Smedhall for CNN.

Its “unique combination of forests, lakes, geothermal activity and Maori culture makes it a must-visit on any North Island tour.”

What to Do In Rotorua

  1. Go on a mountain biking adventure in the Redwoods, or Whakarewarewa Forest. Alternatively you can do the Rotorua Treewalk – “an over half a kilometre long walkway that consists of a series of 21 suspension bridges traversing the gaps between 22 majestic 110 year old Redwood trees.”
  2. Wakeboard, parasail, kayak or white-water raft down the seven meters high Rotorua’s Tutea Falls or go on a fishing tour on Lake Tarawara.
  3. One of the most popular activities in the area is Skyline Rotorua located atop Mount Ngongotaha. Activities include luge riding, stargazing and zip lining.
  4. For your adrenaline fix stop at Agroventures, which offers Swoop – “a super swing that hangs 40 meters above ground” and Schweeb – “the world’s only monorail raceway.”
  5. Take a scenic flight with Volcanic Air to Whakaari (White Island) and Mount Tarawera.
  6. Find out about Maori culture at Te Puia, a Maori cultural center or with Kaitiaki Adventures Aotearoa, who “offer ascents to the summit of Mount Tarawera led by a Maori guide,” as reported in the article.
