Campion Directs Madmen Star

Wellington-born film director Jane Campion has written and will direct a Sundance Channel seven-part miniseries starring Madmen actress Elisabeth Moss, called Top of the Lake. Campion wrote the script with Gerard Lee of Sweetie fame. Garth Davis and Campion will share directing duties when the series commences filming in February in Queenstown. The miniseries is set in the remote mountains of New Zealand and follows the mysterious disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl, the daughter of a local drug lord (played by Peter Mullan). Moss plays the investigator charged with finding the girl. Campion said: “I am in love with the intense beauty of southernmost New Zealand and am excited to be setting a story in this end of the world paradise.” Holly Hunter, lead in Campion’s 1993 award-winning The Piano, also stars. Campion is the second of four women ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director.
