Why Filmmaker Niki Caro Travels

Notions of “home” and “away” get blurry when you’re a citizen of the world. So what does it mean to travel? For Niki Caro, Wellington-born writer and the director of soon-to-be-released The Zookeeper’s Wife, it’s all about leaving home, especially when you’re from the edge of the world.

According to Caro, who lives in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, “five minutes from Sunset Boulevard”, Kare Kare Beach is home.

“It’s the beach where Jane Campion shot The Piano. Also the place where I bought my first house. The day we moved in, I knew I had found my home, my place in the world,” Caro says.

She says she travels because the world is “fascinating.”

“It’s a pleasure and privilege to get all over it.”

She explains to Condé Nast Traveler how travel has defined her life.

“Coming from New Zealand means you are right on the very edge of the earth. The need to travel is instinctive.”
