Wellington Unveils National Virtual Reality Complex

Work on New Zealand’s first national virtual reality complex has begun in Wellington, writes David Swan in an article for the Australian. The centre will be “used to developed and test world-first use cases for the technology.”

“A feasibility for the centre, dubbed ProjectR, has begun and has been funded by a range of Wellington-based tech firms who are collaborating on the project,” writes Swan.

Jessica Manins, newly-appointed centre director, said that “virtual reality and augmented reality technologies would have a significant impact on business and a wide range of application.”

“It is an incredibly competitive industry but Wellington’s tech sector has developed speciality in this area. ProjectR will provide focus and open up even more possibilities,” said Chris Whelan, Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) CEO.

“There can be the mentality that you need to be in the Northern Hemisphere if you’re going to access a bustling tech scene but there are very significant developments in virtual reality happening right here in Australasia.
