New Zealand’s Best Remote Lodges

“Best reached by helicopter, New Zealand’s latest luxury lodges promise wonderful cuisine, total tranquillity and the most spectacular scenery”, writes Tim Jepson in an article for The Telegraph.

  1. Wharekauhau Lodge: Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge already stayed at the private and peaceful lodge near Wellington – a sheep station that still gets 15 percent of its income from sheep. According to the article a neighbouring farm belongs to film director James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar). The lodge is the perfect starting point for strolls on the beach, hikes in the hills or visits to the nearby wine region
  2. Lodge at The Hills: “A dazzling exclusive-use property 45 minutes’ drive from Queenstown” the Lodge at The Hills has a private par-three golf practice hole as well as direct access to The Hills – New Zealand’s most exclusive golf course. Apart from amazing food prepared by John Pickens, the Lodge’s head chef, the property also includes a swimming pool, tennis court, a glorious garden, magnificent views, striking contemporary interiors, faultless service and flexible concierge arrangements.
  3. Minaret Station: One of “New Zealand’s standout new-wave lodges but also one of the world’s great wilderness retreats”, Minaret Station offers a unique experience. It is “hidden high in a beautiful glaciated valley at the heart of the Southern Alps” and can only be reached by helicopter.
  4. Annandale: This lodge is located on Banks Peninsula and is described as “a little piece of pastoral perfection”. Annandale has different luxury lodges – one of them Scrubby Bay “a modern marvel of cedarwood, glass and stone that looks out to sea, a picture of peace where the only sounds are the waves, the wind and the skylarks’ song.”

The beauty of these lodges is the surrounding scenery and their secluded locations. And according to Jepson you can always “rely on the fine food, the wine and the other creature comforts at which New Zealand also excels”.
