Ian Taylor to Speak at Inaugural Magnify Conference

Ian Taylor, founder of Dunedin computer graphics design and production company Animation Research Ltd (ARL) will be one of the speakers at the inaugural Magnify Conference on immersive technology application, during the Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED) Techweek AKL on May 19 and 20.

Animation Research Ltd recently made headlines for their sports division’s work on the America’s Cup. Virtual Eye has worked with the America’s Cup for 20 years. This year they brought the America’s Cup action closer to their audience with their official app – ARL’s Virtual Eye race viewer.

“We’re doing a lot at the moment with 360, as in the America’s Cup and golf. The possibilities, the experience, it goes beyond what people imagine. VR puts you in a truly privileged position, from standing at the tee with the golf players to being like the 12th man on the yacht, that seat you pay tens of thousands of dollars for. You are right there, tasting the action,” said Taylor.

“What’s cool is NZ-designed technology is changing the space. Kiwis are at the forefront and it makes sense that this is the next step. The interactive coverage is being produced by Kiwis in New York.”

The technology is on the cusp of going mainstream and the MAGNIFY conference will focus “on the practical application of virtual and augmented reality hardware, software, applications and services for the consumer and business markets. Coverage traverses usage in games, advertising and brand activation, journalism, television, film and business applications,” according to an official statement.

“The vision behind Magnify is to show people that Virtual and Augmented Reality has moved beyond the experimental phase into the experiential stage, and to highlight what the world’s top brands and entertainment companies are doing to bring the myriad of its applications to the mass market. Virtual and Augmented Reality are literally changing the ways that people, live work and play, and Magnify will bring together the people who are shaping the market,” said Matt Coleman, Magnify co-founder.

The MAGNIFY event is part of TechWeek Auckland, taking part at The Idea Collective, MOTAT, over 19th and 20th May. It is presented by Air New Zealand. For more information on the event please click here.
