Alex Liu Receives MGM Film Script Deal

MGM and The Black List have named Auckland-based Alex Liu, 30, as the third recipient to receive a two-step Guild minimum open script deal as part of their two-year feature film script writing partnership, Deadline senior managing editor Denise Petski writes.

Liu’s dark comedy spec script God Bless You, Mr Kopu is his first submission to The Black List. The film, which Liu will also direct, is currently in development, with fellow New Zealander, Ant Timpson (Come To Daddy, Censor).

“[Liu’s] unique point of view and his genius for storytelling exemplify the voices we are thrilled to be able to champion through this programme. Alex’s writing is tremendously compelling and we cannot wait to dive into new and original stories with him; we’re thrilled to be able to welcome him to the MGM family,” MGM’s Winnie Carrillo said.

Liu’s most recent short film, Smog premiered at the 2022 New Zealand International Film Festival where it won Best Māori Pasifika Film.
