5 Stunning South Island Must See’s

“When it comes to the most spectacular natural wonders of the world, New Zealand undoubtedly belongs to the world’s most stunning destinations”, according to Veru and Petra – two travellers’, who share their New Zealand travel experience and their five must see South Island destinations on their blog Simply Nomadic Life.

1. Lake Pukaki – the largest alpine lake on New Zealand’s South Island. Depending on the weather the 3754 metre high Mount Cook can be seen in the background, which “adds to the dramatic scenery of the place.”

2. Lake Tekapo – the second largest alpine lake on the South Island. Walk up Mount John for 360 degree views of the lake and the Southern Alps in the background.

3. Wharariki Beach – a “real hidden gem” with its “huge waves, impressive cliffs, massive sand dunes and mysterious caves” located in the north of New Zealand’s South Island. Sometimes you can even see seal pups in one of the natural pools.

4. Lake Hawea “with its clear blue water and framed by dramatically looking mountains, is a beautiful and tranquil place to stop at on the way to the West coast and glaciers”.

5. Abel Tasman National Park & Rawhiti Cave – The National Park located at the top of the South Island is New Zealand’s smallest national park and has “gold sandy beaches washed by clear waters of Tasman Bay, impressive rock formations and interesting wildlife (Seals and blue penguins).

The two travellers also visited Rawhiti Cave via a steep and narrow but beautiful track. In the cave itself there are a large number of stalactites and old stalagmites growing towards the entrance of the cave.
