Stops You Need to Make On Your South Island Road Trip

“There are plenty of places and excursions worth checking out when driving through New Zealand’s South Island,” writes Daniel Otis in an article for the Toronto Star. While there are endless possibilities, Otis suggest you make these eight stops on New Zealand’s South Island.

  1. Wine tasting bicycle tour
The Blenheim region is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc and produces 75 per cent of all New Zealand wine. One of the best ways to explore the area’s expansive vineyards and wineries is on a wine tasting bicycle tour with Explore Marlborough, according to Otis.
  2. Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre
Blenheim’s Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is not just a museum; it’s a First World War aviation experience.
  3. Ohau Stream Walk
The Ohau Stream Walk is located approximately 25 kilometres north of Kaikoura (driving on State Hwy. 1). An easy 10-minute stroll “brings you to a gentle stream and towering waterfall where scores of cute little seal pups can be found,” writes Otis.
  4. Mountain bike trip
See Christchurch from a different side on a mountain bike trip up Port Hills. Expect gruelling uphill climbs and whirring descents.
  5. Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo is the perfect place to break up your long drive into the South Island’s interior. Stroll its rock-strewn beach or check out the pioneer-built 80-year-old stone Church of the Good Shepherd.
