Kiwi Film to Premiere at Sci-Fi London Film Festival

New Zealand feature film This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy (short Boulder) will premiere at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival in May. The film previously had a fantastic reception at the 41st Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival, where it was awarded Best Comedy.

Boulder, by debut filmmaker Christian Nicolson and co-writer Andrew Beszant, “is an epic action comedy in the vein of Galaxy Quest meets Monty Python” and is packed with classic sci-fi references. It tells the story of three ordinary guys sucked into the world of a B-grade 1960s space flick.

“Ignoring the rules of low-budget filmmaking, this indie gem boasts exotic locations, a huge cast, studio sets and more spacey props and costumes than you could shake a ray gun at. All this and more helps make This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Actually Really Awesome”, writes James Clark in an article for TNT Magazine.

Nicolson, who makes his living as a painter and sculptor, came up with a very original method for funding the film. He raised the majority of funds for the indie movie by selling art. Whenever new funds were needed the crew took a break from shooting so that Nicolson could paint and hold an exhibition.

In addition he built the sets and made the props himself, while his wife made “the costumes creating a truly unique aesthetic that adds to the comedy of the film.”

The 2016 Sci-Fi London Film Festival runs from 27 April until May 6, 2016.
