Thank you for the updates. I thoroughly enjoy
reading about the exploits of New Zealanders who are making their mark on
the world. For a nation our size we have a lot to be proud of. Thank you
again.

30 years ago I arrived in the USA from NZ to
try and resurrect a running career destroyed by the 1980 USA and allies
Olympic boycott. www.anneaudain.com
In June 1981 I won the first professional race taking the stand to turn TK &
Field pro. I immediately received a lifetime ban from the sport. Fast
forward I have the unique distinction of being in 2 Halls of Fame in 2
Nations. The Running USA Hall of Champions and The NZ Sports Hall of Fame.
In 1993 I founded what is now the largest 5k in the USA for Women and

I'm hoping you might be able to help us spread the word! The film “Topp
Twins-Untouchable Girls” is being released in the States in less than
two weeks! We've had a great ride on the festival circuit with this movie,
winning over 20 awards including the “People's Choice Award for Documentary”
at the Toronto International Film Festival. If you haven't already seen it
please check out the trailer, it's not like any documentary you've watched
before, of this I’m sure.
http://topptwins.com/tv-and-film/untouchable-girls
The Twins will be attending some of the screenings in New York and San
Francisco so if you can make it I absolutely promise they will create the
best kind of chaos, laughter guaranteed!
Show times are on the link below. We open in New York on the 13th of May,
followed by cities across the U.S., but it's a limited release so specific
dates in each.
http://topptwins.com/tv-and-film/film-festival-listings
The response we've had to the film has been incredibly positive, both in the
way people respond to the Twins, but also in the way the audience responds
to New Zealand! If you could help us spread the word to your networks we'd
be VERY grateful as with a film like this one it’s all about word of mouth.

I would just like to say what an inspiring
website, so many icons of NZ history. I have read and loved so many of the
profiles of great New Zealanders - we have much to be proud of, the efforts
of the NZ'ers in the first and second World Wars are a constant source of
pride to me.
Also the achievements of Sir Edmund Hillary, and the humble nature of the man
makes my heart burst with pride to be from the same country as the great
man. May we all take a lesson from a true Kiwi Bloke who gave his all when
it really counted and was instrumental in forging our proud national
identity.

I’m from Christchurch and am currently living
in Melbourne. I've started a Facebook group called
Friends
of Christchurch in Melbourne as means of connecting NZ expats as a
result of the recent Christchurch earthquake. The aim is to provide a
support network for Kiwis in Melbourne who may share experiences being away
from families and loved ones during this difficult time. It may also serve
as a forum for fundraising activities. If you know of anyone who might be
interested in joining this Facebook group, please pass the message on.
Suggestions for ideas would also be welcomed.

I believe that Allan
Wilson on your website was a postdoctoral fellow at Brandeis University
(in biochemistry with N O Kaplan) over the year 1963-64. I have checked with
the administrative assistant there and she has verified that there was a
post doctoral fellow by that name in the department at that time who listed
his birth place as New Zealand and his doctoral degree from UC Berkeley.
Would it be possible (if you can verify the information) to add this to his
educational history? That department at that time had a number of very noted
scientists and I feel fortunate to have crossed paths with them. Thank you.
Sun Feb 13
9:15:35 2011
Ed: Thanks for your keen observation – we’ve followed up and can confirm
that Allan Wilson was indeed a postdoctoral fellow at Brandeis University
with Nathan Kaplan. We will update this to his educational history is his
article in our Heroes section.
For your interest,
here is an ‘In Memoriam’ piece on Allan Wilson written by the American
Society of Human Genetics in 1992.

Hi Brian,
Hope your well. Have just returned from a two months sabbatical to NZ. A
road trip that confirms everything I hold dear about this amazing country I
call my motherland. Despite the horrors of the earthquake and concerns on
loved ones welfare, there remains something magical about the natural
landscape and long white cloud that fills the vast sky.
I love you New Zealand

Hi Denis, I am writing to commend you on your article in the NZ Herald today

have seen people turn their lives around after being addicted to 'P'; (2
sons) they too are good citizens – I would like to say I am Pakeha and so
are my sons – I am reminded often of the worst drug in society that can be
purchased in the local Supermarket (not hidden away at all) it has been of
huge cost in every respect for many years – I might add I have voted State
Prohibition since able to vote at 21 get high on water and cups of tea and
totally addicted to food!!! It just heartens me to hear of the work you are
doing and all the very best. Jenny.

I have just returned to Sydney after five years in Spain and ironically still call NZ HOME – although India plays a close second/third/fourth depending on the email demands of any one day. Hi, I would like to let all expats know that we are bringing back telethon after fifteen years to benefit New Zealand children living in poverty. It may be hard to believe but
it's true that tens of thousands of Kiwi kids missing out on the basics most of us took for granted when growing up, food, warm clothing and shoes. Telethon will be on the 8th and 9th of August for 21.5 hours and we would like expats to support it so we can meet the needs of the 30,000 children waiting for support. Hope you can help get the message out there thanks. Website is

Hi guys, what a fantastic idea this website is. I am loving the idea as there are so many things from home that we just can't get here. The one bummer is I had to order Buzz Bars from an Australian site that imports from NZ and that adds on a little bit more $$$. Hoping you guys are extending the range of foods we can get, because we missing those things over here! If you want any ideas of things we would love, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Hey guys, I just came across your site and I must say it’s CHOICE bro. As a Kiwi living abroad on the west island of AOTEAROA a.k.a. AUSTRALIA, coming across this site made me proud to be a Kiwi, has taken away a bit of my homesickness and I’ve learnt a lot about our fellow countrymen in the Top Ten section. Props on the site. It’s definitely getting saved in my favourites. Keep up the good work. Could suggest maybe a little bit on the site showing how hearty our Kiwi mates are representing overseas?? Once again CHOICE.

There are over 59,000 brands on sale in NZ. The majority come from overseas, the minority are local brands. Often the local brands leave a lot to be desired. Despite being fine brands, they have no NZ attributes, no meaningful or compelling NZ stories and no Kiwi symbolism. They don't sell our country, our people, or our values and success. e.g: Norsewear? Swazi? Kathmandu? Montana Wines? Consider this: Norse is an adjective relating things to Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden. Swazi is an abbreviation of Swaziland, a country in Africa. Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal. Montana is a state in America. These are brands created and marketed in NZ but they are not NZ brands. I have created two excellent NZ brands and am now looking for manufacturers that want brands that tell the NZ story, market NZ values and ideas, and brands that deliver good old-fashioned Kiwi mana! What a wonderful article! My grandfather William Michael Spreckley was facially injured in WWI and underwent many surgeries performed by Harold Gillies. He named his first son, Michael Gillies Spreckley in honour of the surgeon who gave him back his life, and while I have read quite a bit about him, it has always been snippets and I really appreciated the chance to learn so much more than I had previously known about him. What a remarkable man!

I am curious as to why Burt Munro isn't mentioned as a 'Speedster' in
that section, especially as he is famous for land speed records and the
movie "The Fastest Indian" was all about him and his achievements.
Also, how about John Walker, Herb Elliott - Olympic runners who received
medals. W F Moore - world recognised painter of landscapes etc. What about
Sir William Lilley who was the first in the world to perform 'prenatal
intrauterine surgery' in 1963 and as a result thousands of babies have been
saved throughout the world by this pioneer. Just some thoughts. Great
website, just love the feelings of connections it gives, even though there

Great site very positive and informative. New Zealand is a Great country
with great citizens. While most media here seem to chase only the negatives
that are sensation grabbing headlines, it is refreshing that NZEdge and some
others can report GOOD NEWS that dose far out way the NEGATIVE SPIN. Our
Company, Zephyr Energy is investing $50m at Marsden Point in Purpose built
Facilities to Produce Large European designed Wind Turbines. We will be
employing 200-250 staff in the manufacturing alone. The above for Wind Farms
in New Zealand and Australia. KEEP IT SPINNING.

A Canadian whose life was changed by the few months I spent in New Zealand
in 1988, I offer the following flag suggestion in gratitude. The Maori name
for your country, Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud, is highly
evocative, and there is a particular billowy line in European heraldry for
clouds. Using white over green one gets this: http://makepeace.ca/nz/.
Not only does it evoke a long white cloud over verdant land, the two colours
relate to North Island (the original long white cloud) and South Island
(named for greenstone in Maori) respectively. The interlocking line also
evokes the coming together of Maori and non-Maori in an unbreakable bond.
It's simple enough for a child to draw, blends Maori names with Western
heraldry, and shows unity in diversity. Best wishes in finding the right
flag. Just don't think you need to imitate the maple leaf in order to
succeed. You'll succeed in your own way and in your own time.

Is there a NZ architecture/engineering 'group', or green-living
environmental sustainability forum? I grew up in Upper Hutt, worked in
Palmerston North, and now live in USA Saint Louis Metro Region. There is a
couple of news articles in which I'm included (Madison County Illinois).
However I'm just starting out in the 'green sphere' of things. So was
wondering if you could name a few NZ-USA contacts or support groups. P.S.
Keep up the great work, love the site, I show it off to all the NZ
wannabe's.

Would love to make a plug for our next international singing star Bevan
Gardner of Dunedin. He is touring NZ as John Denver with sensational
reviews. This young, partially blind, 21 year old multi-instrumentalist is a
fine young man with tremendous talent. Looks like he could tour the world
with this show and has been offered the opportunity to sing about 200-odd
John Denver songs that have never been recorded as yet. The tour has been
backed by overseas musicians and Bevan has been lauded by the Denver
family.

Thank you very much for your fine piece on Joseph Sinel. I never had the
pleasure of meeting him but he knew both my grandfather and my father. My
father (Robert Matthiesen) was a well known art director and designer in the
Seattle area and Jo Sinel was considered iconic and much admired in our
family as I grew up in the 1950's. Your piece filled in some gaps of
information and provided excellent source material.

My Dad was on the 1957 trip to the Antarctic with Dr Fuchs and Sir Edmund
Hillary, as was the father of a classmate of mine. He had a super 8 movie of
the expedition, which I converted to VHS years ago, and recently to DVD
which I have now uploaded. If you are interested, you can search on
"Sir Edmund Hillary Antarctic 1957" on Google Video or Youtube and
you will find it. If you want information on the trip my Dad is a walking

spent the last 20 years in Japan. Tim and Jonny. Tim is still in Japan;
Jonny came home last year with his family to set up back here in NZ and to

added a jet boat operation, horse safaris, Blokarting, and a few other

I am watching New Zealand with interest. I was brought up in Cannons Creek,
but I find New Zealand a scary place. The word that comes to mind is
'respect'. Cannons Creek was a tough neighborhood but, there was respect. In
my mind true leadership from the Prime Minister down will see respect
return. The road will be long, it will be full of pain, but it will happen.
I don't know John Key; however he seems to be a person who will strive to
take the people with him on the right path.

My friends and I are about to embark on a journey through a television
series called 'Roadtrip Nation' this coming August. The goal of this series
is for college students like me all over the world to discover what it means
to be successful in life by exploring and interviewing people who are
actually excited about and love what they do. We are traveling to New
Zealand to film the documentary and would love any help in finding
interesting people to interview. The documentary is extremely informal, just
a couple students on a roadtrip trying to chat with as many people as we
can. It doesn't matter what the occupation, we are only looking to find
people who have passion for what they do. If anyone in New Zealand who would
be willing to sit down and share their life experience, we would LOVE the
help contact@nzedge.com.

Thank you for posting this wonderful description of "The Great
Morton". In 1953, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Dr Morton
hypnotized my sister and presented her as "The Sleeping Beauty",
in a demonstration of his many talents, which he dazzled his audience with
that evening. There are not many people today, that
could be cut from such humble cloth, and go on to "pick himself up by
the boot-straps", and give so much of himself, to so many people. He
was truly a man of the people.

I have visited your site on a number of occasions (usually in my capacity as
a teacher, but not always). It is a great site with much positive and
interesting material. I was intrigued to see that the only Adventurer you
have is Sir Edmund Hillary. Could I
make a plea for you to add the name of Frank Worsley to that?
Frank was born in Akaroa, and became a sea captain. His
real claim to fame was as the captain of Shackleton's expedition to cross
the Antarctic continent. As is well known the expedition met with disaster
when their ship, the Endurance was crushed and they were left stranded with
no way of rescue. The men set off on the most remarkable journey of survival
known to history. After many trials and tribulations the party reached
Elephant Island, a lonely uninhabited bit of rock in the Southern Ocean.
Here they would die unless further help was found. Shackleton and Worsley
set of in the only seawothry craft to sail countless miles across the ocean
to South Georgia where there was a whaling station. With three other men
they succeeded in doing this through Worsley's extraordinary powers of
navigation. On reaching South Georgia they found themselves on the wrong
side and had to cross the high range of intervening mountains - or die.
Worsley, Shackleton and another man managed this. Eventually all members of
the expedition were rescued with NO loss of life. Worsley's contribution to
this is second to none (although he would modestly give all the credit to
the more famous Shackleton).
Unbelievably the story continues... On reaching
civilisation they found the world was in the middle of the Great War.
Worsley joined up, working on Q ships and leading convoys into Russia. Peace
saw him trading with Iceland and other locations and when WWII started he
enlisted again! My paragraphs do not do the man any
justice whatsoever but further information can be found in the NZ Geographic
magazine, and Worsley's own autobiography - Shackleton's Boat Journey

Is Peter Jackson still making films about hobbits and giant gorillas? I'd
like to see the man with his talents come back to his own country and make a

I'm a kiwi living in London, and following on from what I
hear at home, I have set up a tribute page on facebook.com which I am hoping
to get many people commenting on. What I would ultimately like to do is pass
this on to the Sir Ed's family to add
to the many millions of people who no doubt have already passed on
condolences. It is important that we all recognise the scale of impact the
man had on not only New Zealanders (not overtly, but I believe he was the
pioneer of the kiwi OE!) but others around the world as well. The direct
link is: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8880296999&ref=mf
If you can help with ideas on who to contact
to pass this through to Sir Ed's family or any representatives then that
would be great. contact@nzedge.com
