Thanks for adding Harold Gillies and Archie McIndoe to the website. Good stuff. There are so many pioneering Kiwi surgeons and doctors you could also mention. But a couple spring to mind. The first is of course the famous Brian Barratt-Boyes (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_ BarrattBoyes and http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/people/brian-barratt-boyes) It may also be appropriate to mention Margaret Cruickshank, the first woman doctor registered in NZ, and Reg Hamlin (see http://www.hamlinfistula.org.nz/ unsung_kiwi_hero) who has done so much for the women of Ethiopia.

I'm just writing to you in relation to Denis O'Reilly's article on his ancestors origin. I believe that his ancestors were from a place called Ballyledder, Curraghmore, Beaufort co. Kerry. I have reason to believe this as on the ship Osaki there is reference to an O'Sullivan family which would have been neighbours of the Reilly family in the area. Also my Grandaunt Ellen O'Reilly/lane often spoke about how she thought we had relative's in Zealand or Australia. Also my great great Grandfather Michael had eight in Family of which I can only account for four on the 1901 census of Ireland. I could be totally wrong but if you have any information on the area in Kerry that your ancestors came from you will be able to locate them through the 1901 Irish census which you can find at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/ 1901/Kerry/Curraghmore/Ballyledder/

Help! Many years ago I was listening to a talk by Sir Edmund Hillary on a Canadian short wave radio station. The theme of his statement was that competing was far more important than winning (that is a simplification but is the basic theme). He was speaking against the idea that winning is everything. I have never been able to locate a transcript of this talk and wonder if anyone can help me find it? It does not seem to be listed in any of Sir Ed's quotes?

Hi, I used to subscribe, quite some years ago, and would now like to renew my contact with NZEdge. We've just released a very smart browser-based app that harnesses online conversations and makes sense of them. We've sighted out inspiration as being some of the biggest kiwi achievers. We'd like to reference www.nzedge.com if that's OK with you guys? Cheers Doug

FYI another Famous NZer Ellen Dougherty was my great great Aunt. She was the first Registered Nurse in the World and 8th Registered Female Chemist in the world. She did her nursing training at Wellington Hospital which assumes Wellington Hospital provided the first certificated nursing program. Ellen was also the first Matron of Palmerston North Hospital.

How about adding Archibald Baxter to your list of amazing Kiwis? He is an extraordinary person. Read his memoirs, ""We Will Not Cease,"" and you will come to know a man who epitomizes courage, honor, integrity and decency.

Hello, My name is Greg and I'm from France. I am currently in Wellington where I study New Zealand gangs. My thesis deal mainly with neo-tribalism, Maori identity, the gang as something beyond its demonized representation and I am taking a close look at James Baxter's work through Jerusalem's commune. As a Hegelian idealist, I believe the failure in the actualisation of an idea is the failure of the idea itself. Denis defines himself as a 'Baxterite' and I would like to interview him. I am John Mc Dougall's friend who taught Toa and Keanu at Clyde Quay Primary School. John told me Denis is THE person I need to talk to. Best regards.
