21 nominations received for our giveaway of New Zealand Hall of
Fame: 50 Remarkable New Zealanders. The book is a treasure-trove of
real-life information on some of the nation's most impressive New
Zealanders. Thanks to New Holland we had three copies of this collection
to giveaway. We asked NZEdge readers to suggest a New Zealander they
believe should be featured in the next book.
New Zealand Hall of Fame: 50 Remarkable New Zealanders can be
purchased for $34.99 through the
NZEdge Store.

Christine B nominates Ernest
Rutherford
I would like to put forward the name of Sir Ernest Rutherford for the
next book, 50 More Remarkable New Zealanders. Despite the length of time
that has past since the atom was split for the first time, it had global
significance and is still talked about in schools and books worldwide.

Herbert John Pither
Herbert John (Bert) Pither (1871 – 1934)
New Zealand aviation pioneer. His flight on 5 July 1910 was the first in
an all-metal steel-tubed frame aircraft.

I do not think you should leave out James Waddell, probably the most
highly decorated soldier of the 1st World War.

I would like to nominate Barry Crump, a great author and in many ways a
pioneer of literature. His short stories are very witty and capture the
NZ spirit.

Warren O
nominates Janet Frame
I would like to nominate Janet Frame for inclusion in the 2nd edition of
the NZ hall of fame. Janet Frame overcame years of misdiagnosis and
mistreatment in psychiatric hospitals (only the award of a national
literary prize for her first publication of short stories saved her from
a lobotomy) to become a giant of literature producing 11 novels, 3
autobiographies and numerous poems and short stories. She was one of the
first recipients of the New Zealand Arts Foundation Icon Award.

Warren O
nominates Richard Pearse
I would like to nominate Richard William Pearse of Temuka, pioneer
aviator, for inclusion in the 2nd edition of NZ hall of fame. Pearse
flew and landed a powered heavier-than-air machine on 31 March 1903,
some nine months before the Wright brothers flew their aircraft at Kitty
Hawk. In 1902, Pearse built and patented a bicycle with vertical crank
gears and self-inflating tyres. He then designed and built a
two-cylinder "oil engine" which he mounted on a tricycle undercarriage
surmounted by a linen-covered bamboo wing structure and rudimentary
controls. Although it lacked an aerofoil section wing, his flying
machine resembled modern aircraft design much more than did the
Wright brothers’
machine: monoplane rather than biplane; tractor rather than pusher
propeller; stabiliser and elevators at the back rather than the front;
and ailerons rather than wing-warping for controlling banking. It bore a
remarkable resemblance to modern microlight aircraft. Pearse patented
designs that included such aircraft technology as ailerons (which he was
possibly the inventor of) and lightweight air-cooled engine, and later
worked on a tilt-rotor flying-machine for personal use — the design of
which resembled an autogyro or helicopter. He was a very modest sort of
kiwi bloke - he never disputed the much publicised claims of the Wright
Brothers to have achieved the first heavier than air powered flights as,
having seen that “history had already been written”, he declined to
appear to posterity as a disputatious claimant to the first controlled
powered flight.

Warren O
nominates Burt Munro
I would like to nominate Burt Munro the motorcycle racer from
Invercargill for inclusion in the 2nd edition of NZ hall of fame. Burt
was a modest man of very modest means, and displayed considerable
Kiwi-style ingenuity in pursuing his achievements of world motorcycle
speed records. He modified his 1920 motorcycle using parts and tools he
made himself. He achieved 8 NZ speed records and 3 world speed records,
1 of which stands to this day. Munro was 68 and was riding a 47-year old
machine when he set his last record.

Warren O
nominates Denis James Matthews Glover
I would nominate Lt-Commander Denis James Matthews Glover
DSC for inclusion in the second edition. Not only a war hero
decorated for bravery, but even more significantly a huge influence on
the NZ style of poetry and literature. He founded Caxton Press, which
gave many New Zealand writers the opportunity for publication. His works
included “Sings Harry” (a series of poems), “Arawhata Bill” and “The
Magpies” (the refrain of which is probably the most famous line in NZ
poetry).

Warren O
nominates James K Baxter
Remarkable that he wasn't included in the first edition, I think that
NZ’s great poet James K Baxter should certainly be included in the 2nd
edition.

Wayne B
nominates Charles Upham
I would like to nominate Charles Upham, the double VC winner.
