Based On a True Story
Two years in the making, the latest album from Fat Freddy's Drop  'Based On a True Story' was a culinary exercise in Perfectionism. And the result is better than Baked Alaska.

Head of the kitchen is musical mastermind Mu (aka DJ Fitchie, Chris Faiumu). He's worked furiously in the studio, kneading the undeniable musicianship of Fulla Flash, Tony Chang and Ho Pepa, drizzling the golden vocals of Joe Dukie (aka Dallas Tamaira), and dusting the end result with his signature electro and dub flourishes.

A Five-star serving of old-school, soul-gospel, roots-funk and dub-reggae - Based On A True Story was released with a total absence of hype and sprinted to No 1 on the New Zealand charts in the first week of its release. National popularity topped only by the All Blacks.

Fat Freddy's Drop first grabbed the attention of the international music community in 2002 when the single 'Midnight Marauders' was released under the guise of Joe Dukie and Fitchie by Berlin label Best Seven, it quickly hit European decks and dancefloors from London to Berlin. Midnight Marauders then climbed to the No.1 spot on reknowned BBC DJ Gilles Peterson's Top Twenty World Wide picks for 2002, this was repeated in 2003, with the single 'Hope'.

In 2003 dropped the official band debut with a 10" release of Hope and b-side dub trip 'Bluey', on London label Kartel. Ever since then, the heat in the kitchen has just got hotter. Mu was awarded Best Producer (2003, and 2005) and Most Outstanding Musician (2005) at the b-Net NZ Music Awards (and it's rumoured he rewrote the manual for Akai's MPC 2000 sampler), Joe Dukie's vocal talent was also celebrated, winning Best Vocalist  for 2005. At the 2005 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards Fat Freddy's Drop took home four 'Tuis' - best album and best roots album for Based on a True Story as well as best group and the people's choice award.

And if all that wasn't enough, Fat Freddy's have extended their prowess (and their pukus) with a little help from Alison Holst's nemesis Dobie Blaze. Dobie keeps the home fires burning, and the troops feed - check out his cooking show at www.fatfreddysdrop.com, you'd be crazy to miss out on Tutanekai’s Smoked Trout Crepes.

"This slab of vinyl will not be leaving my box for quite a while, if ever. The message is so true and the production 1st class. . .  A future classic and a track that would have been championed at NYC's Body and Soul, no doubt. 5 out of 5"  Pathaan - DJ Magazine

"...A sound sufficiently fresh and original that many believe this band offers our biggest chance of international musical success outside the mainstream rock market…" Grant Smithies - Sunday Star Times
